Beyond Identity is a thoughtful exploration of the meaning of self. The word ipseity comes to mind—the essence of being oneself. I often simplify the concept from selfhood to simply Self, and that idea has become central to my own reflections in About Time.
The first word in Beyond Identity suggests a progression. To move beyond something, we must first recognize what is. This film moves beyond visible structures and outward appearances to explore the inner Self—the aspects of identity that exist beneath the surface.
As a visual artist whose work is rooted in landscapes and seascapes, I have come to see Self as a journey of reflection and respite. In that sense, Beyond Identity raises important questions about how we understand ourselves and one another.
The work is both challenging and compassionate. It reminds us that art can do more than represent the world around us; it can encourage deeper self-awareness, which in turn may lead to greater care for others.
